QUICK BRIEF
Business
Preparations During Uncertainty
Currently,
the global economy appears to have taken a downturn. Most news bulletins,
business magazines and newspapers reveal figures, based on the evidence of
the previous year, which help to fuel this downturn. Although the reports
also suggest that the economy will start to improve in around 6 months.
Again historically, evidence shows
that after a period of time the economy will always improve,. The big
questions are:
- What
will trigger the improvement?
- When
will the economy, improve ?
- What
areas of the economy will benefit first ?
Already
there are indicators of the areas which will trigger the economy to pick
up. One of the key indicators is possibly the telecommunications sector:
- As
the roll out of broadband services increases, providing fast internet
connections. This will accelerate business and consumer demand for
these and related telecoms services. In turn, the wider availability
of broadband services will encourage content providers to improve
service delivery and choice, such as providing music and video on
demand, or instant market reports.
- The
forthcoming launch of Third Generation (3G) mobile phones will add a
new dimension to the telecommunications world. This will stimulate the
demand for new and replacement mobile phones and the provision of
related services. In turn these will help the provision of new and
improved services, such as, instant availability or booking of
services, and the provision of fast internet access on the move.
Companies
need to make preparations, early, in order to be ready when the economy
picks up. In some ways, this goes against the normal reactions to a down
turn in the economy, which are to cut back and reduce spending. Early
preparations can help to ensure that the company can take advantage of the
new economy as soon as it starts to pick up, thereby gaining significant
competitive advantage.
The
products and services themselves will need to be prepared in a flexible
way. This will allow them to be adapted to the emerging economy. In
practice, this will mean developing core products and services, with
additional modules, or a flexible outer layer (packaging, advertising
etc.), which can be added or adapted to the needs of the emerging markets.
All
preparations will also need to be flexible, in terms of time to implement
and launch. This approach will allow companies to introduce new and
improved services, at a time which will help to maximise
profitability.
