Over the last few years the way the Internet has been used by business for marketing and selling products and services has changed dramatically. This has resulted in electronic trading being transformed from an expensive and very specialised process into a cheap and realistic business solution for selling and marketing products via electronic commerce. As the Internet matures it is providing a global infrastructure accessible to vast number of people. This opens a major marketing/sales platform for companies who are prepared for the new e-business market place. The internet makes global markets a reality. In order to be competitive in modern business and to compete in the global market place, organisations must become e-business aware.

Legacy Applications The current business model for trading via electronic commerce or e-commerce shows rapid growth, with companies moving away from traditional legacy sales applications that relied on phone, fax, and mail, which were plagued by inefficiencies. These applications are being rapidly redeveloped into e-business applications (see complex commerce, below). They have also provided major cost savings, and increased efficiency, due to the automation of the business processes used by the e-business applications. Saving have also been made with the introduction of dedicated e-business applications that can provide a knowledge base, allowing for the development of online support for user self help, web sites and virtual call centres. In turn, this has reduced the need for large call centres to support the new e-business applications.
