CASE STUDY - SELECTING COMMUNICATIONS
SYSTEMS
Organisation
County Council
Requirement
Modems were used to
connect the main computer systems, at County Hall, with remote council offices and Police Stations. It had been found that
some offices were having problems accessing the high priority systems, such as the Child Protection
Register. As a result, it was decided to upgrade
the remote council offices and Police Stations to ISDN connections.
There was a need to select an ISDN package that would
provide the flexibility and performance to meet the requirements of
the business units needing access the computer systems at County Hall.
Approach
 |
Identify the ISDN packages that were
available, by contacting vendors directly and attending ISDN Communication
exhibitions |
 |
Define, with the
council business units, the business selection criteria, performance and functional testing for the ISDN
packages |
 |
Select suitable
ISDN package suppliers and confirm initial findings |
 |
Obtain
samples from ISDN package suppliers for testing and evaluation |
 |
Oversee the system and functional testing
to provide verification of the criteria specified by the business units |
Outcomes
Two ISDN packages were selected for use for the remote Police Stations and and council offices:
One system was selected for high performance users, such as Police and Social Services. The second system was selected for use by council administrative staff in the remote offices.
Successful migration to ISDN data communications.
Migrators have also provided consultancy on
